The story of TMT

TMT Group is a Manchester-based general contractor delivering design, refurbishment and fit-out projects across the UK. In the last three years, the business has doubled in size. For Mike Houghton, their Health & Safety lead, that growth is no coincidence. He says it partly comes down to a safety culture that everyone is bought into, from their Managing Director down to every operative on site.

They used SignOnSite to manage sign-ins and inductions. It did this well. But everything else was still manual, and that was eating up chunks of the site team's workweek. For example:

• Onboarding subcontractors meant chasing documents, checking inductions manually and making sure everything was in place before anyone set foot on site

A simpler onboarding process for subcontractors

Getting subcontractors onboarded used to mean a 30-minute on-site session, with operatives filling in personal details, credentials and reading through site rules before a single tool was picked up. Now with Breadcrumb implemented, the process is simpler for everyone involved (without compromising safety, of course):

• Before their first day on a TMT site, operatives complete a digital induction through Breadcrumb (no app needed) from wherever they are. 
• When they arrive on site, they scan the QR code to check in and digitally sign their RAMS. The whole process takes just a few minutes.

Mike says that leaves just a five to ten minute in-person briefing with the site manager going over the site rules before workers hit the ground running.

Every completed induction and RAMS signature is stored digitally and synced to Procore automatically. And if any details need updating, the site team can edit the induction directly rather than putting the worker through the full process again.

Site data and docs automatically syncs with Procore

With Sign on Site, only work hours made it to Procore automatically. Everything else had to be downloaded and uploaded manually. Now with Breadcrumb, TMT's safety documents like RAMS, inductions, Toolbox Talks and permits push through to the right Procore folder automatically.

Before Breadcrumb, staying across compliance on multiple sites meant physically being on them or chasing site managers for updates. Now TMT's safety team has a live view of who is checked in across every site at any given moment, and can monitor compliance remotely in real time.

When conditions change on site and they need to get a message out fast, the site team can send an SMS directly to every checked-in worker in seconds. No tracking anyone down, no relying on the message filtering through.

Now the data comes straight from Breadcrumb. TMT runs a monthly safety report for senior leadership covering working hours, toolbox talks completed and RAMS signed off. The data is pulled directly from Breadcrumb and taken into client progress meetings to demonstrate proactive safety management.

Mike’s advice for making the switch

When Mike made the case to move to Breadcrumb, his biggest concern was change management. Getting 20+ sites, their site managers and a rotating pool of subcontractors onto a new system is no small ask. What surprised him was how easy it was to switch to Breadcrumb.
