ODGroup had already achieved what most construction companies are still striving for – a cloud-based operation with real-time project visibility through Procore. But their safety software was lagging behind, and manual data entry was eating into the time their teams needed on site.
Switching to Breadcrumb changed that. Within months, ODGroup had eliminated safety data double-handling, given site managers back hours every week, and built a fully auditable digital record of every induction, permit, and RAMS submission – all connected directly to Procore.
Here's how they did it.
The story of ODGroup
Established in 2004, ODGroup is an award-winning office fit-out & refurbishment company delivering both turnkey design and build solutions, as well as traditional fit-out contracts across London and the surrounding areas. A commitment to quality, safety, integrity, and accountability is at the core of how they operate.
ODGroup had always been ambitious about technology. Long before many competitors had moved past paper, they were building a cloud-based workflow designed to give teams, stakeholders, and clients visibility across every project.
Procore became the spine of that operation. But as time went on, they discovered that their existing safety software didn't integrate with Procore as well as they needed it to.
Jaspreet Sahota, Group Health & Safety Advisor at ODGroup, who implemented the software, recognised that the status quo wasn't sustainable. Every hour spent transferring data between systems was an hour a site manager wasn't on the ground.
“I thought...something's got to give. When you invest in a system, you want it to save time.”
Searching the Procore Marketplace, Jas found Breadcrumb. The two-way integration was the deciding factor.
"One of the biggest selling points is that the projects and directories in Procore sync straight across to Breadcrumb, and it all links back to Procore documents. You're not navigating between systems to find anything" - Jaspreet Sahota
Less than 12 months after signing up, Breadcrumb became the standard across all active projects.
RAMS Reviews Are Done Faster, With Fewer Back-and-Forths
ODGroup's RAMS collection process used to run across two systems. Submissions came in through Procore and were manually transferred across to their safety software. Every handoff between systems was a step that added time and admin pressure to their already busy team of Document Controllers.
With Breadcrumb, that cycle is gone. Subcontractors vetted through ODGroup's pre-qualification portal are now automatically pushed to both Procore and Breadcrumb. Onboarding is simpler too. Document Controllers send a link with a pre-populated email for subcontractors to submit their RAMS, saving the team from having to set each one up manually.
"It's automatically creating your filing system for you, without you having to generate all of that or navigate around to find the data. If you have audits, you've got it all there, readily available," Jaspreet says.
The RAMs review process is standardised too. Construction managers work through a structured checklist and leave comments on what needs to be amended.
Ben Brown, Construction Manager on ODGroup’s Fleet Street project, says it’s much easier to review RAMs and it benefits subcontractors too.
"I think it’s a lot easier. Even subcontractors we've worked with before have said it's much easier than having things emailed back and forth," he says.
Accountability Built Into Every Permit
Permits to Work are among the most critical safety controls on any construction site. Before Breadcrumb, ODGroup managed them through PDFs, offering limited visibility into when a permit was actually actioned.
Now, subcontractors request permits through the app. Construction managers review and sign off digitally, and every permit closes out with a timestamped record. Jas and the site teams can view the status of all permits at a glance on their phones or laptops.
"With Breadcrumb, you have the request, the sign-off, the close-out, everything correctly dated. It holds everyone accountable.”
Ben recalls managing permits on an eight-storey building at a previous employer.
"You'd have to go out onto site, check the area, sign the paperwork off, and then at the end of the day you'd be chasing people round to get the permit closed. With Breadcrumb, you get the alert, you go and have a look, and it's all signed off on the app."
Real-Time Visibility Across Multiple Sites From Anywhere
Jaspreet manages safety across all ODGroup sites, including projects outside London that aren't always easy to visit. Before Breadcrumb, building a picture of what was happening across all of them meant digging through data across disconnected systems.
Now everything is in one place.
"With paperwork, it could go missing or not be filed correctly. Moving to a digital system allows clear visibility to see inductions, permits, RAMS from any place. This is especially impactful as I can offer support or advice when the team require, as I have full visibility,” says Jaspreet.
That visibility extends to emergency situations too. During an evacuation, the site team has a live attendance register on their phone rather than a paper sign-in book.
"Everyone likes the evacuation tool. You've got the register, the attendance, everyone's mobile numbers, not just the supervisors. If you need to contact someone directly, you can," Jaspreet explains.
The impact is felt on the ground. Ben describes his first evacuation drill using Breadcrumb.
"Being on the street in London, walking around with a bit of paper, calling out people's names. It's not exactly easy. With Breadcrumb, it's just so much easier. It really does make our jobs simpler" - Ben Brown, Construction Manager
Getting Construction Manager Buy-In and Giving Time Back
Rolling out a new digital system across a diverse workforce isn’t as simple as saying “we’re doing this now.” ODGroup's sites have a mix of ages and levels of digital confidence, from project managers to operatives who have worked the same way for decades. Getting buy-in meant showing people what was in it for them.
Jaspreet made a decision not to frame Breadcrumb as a compliance requirement. Instead, she led every training session by showing site teams what they personally got out of using it.
The site diary was often the benefit that landed. Jaspreet would tell construction managers that by running their safety processes through Breadcrumb, most of their Procore site diary would be populated automatically.
"Seventy percent of the site diary is already populated. You don't have to trawl through a security register to see how many people you've had on site. You've got everything at the click of a few buttons," she says.
For Ben, who was used to collating information at the end of a long day at his previous employer, that was an immediate win.
“Now I've got the ability to be on site, a lot more on the ground, checking progress, making sure the project is being built right. It is like a new world really compared to what I was dealing with in the past.”
That shift, from desk to site, is exactly what Jaspreet set out to achieve.
Danielle George, Regional Customer Success Lead at Breadcrumb, adds, “From the moment Jas completed her training, it was clear she understood not just the software, but the difference it could make to the ODGroup site teams. The way ODGroup has embedded Breadcrumb across their sites is exactly the kind of adoption we hope to see.”
Overall Results
Just over a year of using Breadcrumb it has become the operational backbone of how ODGroup manages health and safety. The eliminated double-handling of information, freed up their teams’ time and every compliance record is timestamped and traceable.
What started as an evaluation has become ODGroup's standard across all new projects. The business has been shortlisted for Digital Transformation Awards – recognition that the changes they've made reflect a genuine cultural shift, not just a process update.
For Ben, the results speak for themselves.
“When I speak to friends at other contractors who are thinking about a safety app, I just say… use Breadcrumb. We’ve had no issues with it,” says Ben.
Jaspreet shares a similar view for other safety leaders considering digitising.
"Do it. You won't look back. Look at systems that actually integrate with each other. Having one single source of truth, with visibility across platforms, means you can pull your data at a click of a few buttons."
